Required texts:

Course description: This course consists of the careful reading and discussion of Augustine and Aquinas. The course is intended primarily for (but not limited to) philosophy majors.

Requirements (& Grading): The class will be divided into teams of three students apiece.  Each team will take responsibility for starting class discussion on a rotating basis.  So, for instance, one team will prepare something for January 30 on the first three chapters of Augustine’s Book II (pp. 29-37).  This could be a series of questions that will stimulate discussion, or a passage that seems particularly puzzling, or key terms and theses in the logic of the reading, etc.  The team may divide the 50-minute class among themselves or work together as a team throughout the class.  Given the current enrollment, I anticipate that each team will take a turn four or five times in the semester.  This prepared teamwork will count for 33% of the final grade.  Another 33% will be based on each student’s day-to-day cooperation with the discussions prompted by other teams; a final term paper (which replaces a final exam) will make up the remainder of the grade (34%).
